Our vision is to create a dog shelters that will replicate across the island of Haiti to ensure every department in Haiti has a method for controlling, caring and handling the street dogs.
As we undertake a initiative to save street dogs in Haiti, we embark on a new program called Feed the Strays (FTS). The focus of this program is solely feeding the stray dogs of Haiti. FTS will try to change the culture and deep-rooted feeling of resentment towards dogs. In Haiti dogs are an afterthought if thought of at all. It is rare for a dog to be treated or seen as a loving pet. Feed the Strays will try and create a relationship when needed, nurture the relationship when there. This will enable HSDP to make its mark in regions in Haiti that are unknown or have yet to be reached. We will learn about the number of stray dogs in a region, develop relationships with not only the strays but with the influential residents within a local area.
The program will allow us to capture the present and future activities and life cycle of a stray dog. We will engage Haitians in their communities by giving them opportunities for employment by feeding the strays. FTS workers will also allow HSDP to document stray dog behavior in Haiti, educate Haitians on the responsibility of caring for the dogs by way of outreach programs. Finally, we will seek to organize rescue missions for the dogs that are assigned to the Feed the Stray Worker (FSW).
To get this program started we realize that there will be the need for much training of the Feed the Stray Workers, sponsorship (for the purchase of dog food, workers stipend, etc.) and learn cultural sensitivity to dogs to make this program a success.
