In 2015 Diane Gaillard visited Haiti for a much-needed vacation and to connect with her ancestral roots. What she immediately found were countless roaming dogs that not only distracted her from her vacation but also got her attention. With her vacation funds she purchased bags of dog food to feed the dogs at night.

After running out of food and money she knew that when she returned home that she would have to find like-minded people, who would be interested in helping the street dogs in Haiti. So, upon her return, she made various calls to certain agencies and met with several people hoping to find those interested. A few months later she made her breakthrough when she was put in touch with Humane Society International to collaborate and work with their volunteers. Today, she is the founder and Executive Director of the Haiti Street Dog Project, with a small team of animal lovers and local veterinarians in Haiti striving, to develop infrastructure and provide plans for animal control, shelter, health services, adoption, and rescue.
